The Director
Born in 1942 in Munich, Werner Herzog made his first film in 1961. Since then, he has written, produced and directed over 40 more, including Aguirre : the Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1978), Fitzcarraldo (1982) and, more recently, My Best Fiend (1999), which relates his stormy relationship with Klaus Kinski.
The film
When their planet turned out to be uninhabitable, the occupants of the Wild Blue Yonder made for new horizons. Some settled on Earth. One of them - played by Brad Dourif - bitterly recounts their failure to establish a flourishing colony, and build a capital able to rival Washington DC. He also expresses exasperation at the arrival of humans on his native planet. Interspersing his account with images of the new blue planet, Herzog has created an offbeat sci-fi tale that is both spellbinding and burlesque.
