An ambitious vocation

Drawing on the heritage left by Jules Verne and Nantes’ surrealist past, the Utopiales established itself in Nantes’ cultural landscape at the very start of the new century, in the year 2000. Since its inception, the festival’s aim has been to introduce as many people as possible to the world of foresight, new technologies and imagination. We’re convinced that under the guise of dreams and escapism, science fiction is a powerful educational tool to explore reality.

An original concept

Literature, science, cinema, comics, exhibitions, role-playing games, video games and an Asian pole: for over 20 years, the Utopiales multidisciplinary program has brought together the worlds of science and science fiction. With over 1,067 films screened, 2,500 guest authors, artists and researchers, and almost 170 exhibitions and art installations, this uniqueness has made the Nantes-based festival a must-see event in Europe and across the Atlantic.

The Utopiales bring together scientists, researchers, writers, scriptwriters, cartoonists, film-makers and all those who, day after day, design fabulous worlds from fragments of reality, to make them pure thought experiments, inviting us to cultivate our curiosity and imagination to strengthen our openness to the world and enable us to become fully involved in its future evolution.
